As a performer

My work moves beyond the saxophone toward a body-centered performance practice. Through contemporary repertoire, voice, movement, and theatrical approaches, I treat sound as an extension of the performer’s physical and emotional presence. I explore new sonic colors, spatial relationships, and expressive dimensions, often collaborating with composers, dancers, and other artists to create performances that are immersive, interdisciplinary, and alive in the moment.

About me

Borja Alejo (Madrid, Spain) is a saxophonist whose artistic practice spans performance, creation, and collaboration across contemporary and classical music. Driven by a relentless curiosity for the expressive possibilities of his instrument, he explores acoustic and electronic sound, spatiality, and movement, often in dialogue with composers, dancers, and other artists. His artistic vision has been shaped by a multicultural journey between Spain, the Netherlands, and Austria, fostering an openness to diverse musical languages and perspectives.

An active soloist and ensemble musician, Borja has performed in major concert halls across Europe, including the Auditorio Nacional de Música, Palau de la Música, Musikverein, TivoliVredenburg, and Concertgebouw, and has taken part in international contemporary music festivals such as Wien Modern, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, and ENSEMS. His work moves seamlessly between solo, chamber, and orchestral projects, frequently in interdisciplinary, electronic, or experimental contexts.

Borja completed his Bachelor of Music in Classical Saxophone at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid, graduating with highest distinction. During this period, he studied under the guidance of Andrés Gomis and Francisco Martínez, who played a central role in shaping his artistic and technical development. He also broadened his perspective by attending masterclasses with saxophonists from around the world.

As part of his undergraduate studies, he completed an exchange year at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Netherlands), where he studied with Johan van der Linden and Deborah Witteveen, and worked with Willem Van Merwijk and Andreas Mader, gaining insight into diverse pedagogical approaches and performance traditions.

He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Contemporary Music (chamber music focus) at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, studying under Álvaro Collao León, with a strong emphasis on contemporary repertoire and collaborative performance practice.

Alongside his performance career, Borja maintains an international practice as curator and artistic collaborator. He contributes to the contemporary music landscape as artistic manager at Concert Austria, community and artistic manager at Argo Kollektiv, and co-founder of Synnart, a contemporary ensemble and platform for new music. Passionate about sharing knowledge, he also teaches, encouraging curiosity and creativity.

Alongside performing, I develop projects and collaborations that extend the artistic process beyond the stage. I am drawn to creating spaces where ideas can grow, interact, and reach audiences in meaningful ways. By combining experimentation, interdisciplinary approaches, and collaborative work, I aim to foster curiosity, dialogue, and new ways of experiencing sound and performance.
