Research on José María Sánchez-Verdú

Carried out between 2024 & 2025

My research on José María Sánchez-Verdú developed alongside my undergraduate studies and formed the basis of my Bachelor’s thesis. It is the first research project to examine the central importance of the saxophone in the work of one of Spain’s leading contemporary composers.

The project combines score analysis, archival study, and direct engagement with primary resources, including interviews with Sánchez-Verdú himself and his principal saxophone collaborator. Through this work, I explored how the saxophone functions as a dramaturgical, symbolic, and expressive element within his compositions, shaping both timbre and form.

Beyond the analytical aspect, the research has directly informed my performance practice, offering insights into interpretive possibilities and contemporary techniques. It exemplifies the intersection of artistic research and performance, demonstrating how investigation, collaboration, and critical engagement can enhance both understanding and execution of contemporary music.
